The long-term objective of this project is to restore forest roadways, in an ecologically relevant timeframe, within the herd boundary of the Chase caribou herd range and the traditional territory of Tsay Keh Dene Nation. In 2018, the project identified candidate roadways based on an approach that balances ecological, cultural and logistical considerations. A desktop algorithm and subsequent engagement activities forest licensees and other Provincial representatives identified candidate roads. The results identified 1,942.8 km of road with potential for rehabilitation and/or reforestation activities across the entire Chase caribou herd boundary. An estimated 971.5 ha of area was identified for rehabilitation activities which represents a sizable opportunity for road rehabilitation, cumulative effects analyses, and access management planning.
