Announcing the 2026-2027 Webinar Series

Last year, our lunchtime webinar series brought new ideas to hundreds of restoration practitioners across northern B.C. and beyond. From September 2025 to May 2026, we hosted speakers and attendees from across Canada and the U.S. to learn with and from one another to improve our collective efficacy and planning and doing restoration. And we're doing it again!
Back by popular demand, we are re-launching our webinar series on September 29th with a talk from Zack Holden about Regenmapper, a tool the US Forest Service uses to infom decision making after a wildfire. Regenmapper is a web-based tool that points to areas where replanting will be most successful after wildfire based on the probability of natural forest recovery. We asked Holden to support our collaborative learning because of ongoing conversations you are having about when and how to intervene after wildfire in our wildfire and forest ecology working groups, including some collaborations emerging after our April 2026 webinar with the Canadian Forest Service on their Forest Ecosystem Simulator (ForES).

Our second speaker this season is Dr. Ellen Macdonald, who co-authored a recent study that showed community composition recovery varied widely across forest types and by taxa following clear-cut harvest. Recovery in conifer forests was greater than 50 years for brophytes, vascular plants, small mammals, and lichens. We asked Dr. Macdonald to share knowledge with the CoP because a practitioner shared a news article about the work in our collaborative workspace and you wanted to learn more.

Reminder: We work for you! Both our confirmed speakers in this year's webinar series were invited into collaborative knowledge exchange because our community of northern restoration practitioners identified an unaddressed need. We also want to know if you or anyone in your contacts can speak to the following subjects and themes of interest identified by practitioners:
- Ecological grief, also known as eco-grief and climate anxiety, and practical strategies to manage overwhelm;
- Volunteer opportunities and strategies to boost your restoration experience and resume, especially to benefit students and emerging practitioners;
- Techniques to motivate collaboration and connect with the general public, including emotional appeal (appeal to pathos) in science communication;
- Novel and experimental restoration treatments and when to use (or not use) them, e.g., assisted migration, commercial thinning, low-tech process-based riverscape restoration tools, nanoremediation;
- Technology in the field: How to successfully integrate drones, wildlife cameras, and other monitoring technology into restoration planning and experimental design; and
- Streamlining monitoring - platforms and applications for monitoring, reporting, and verification of restoration projects and programs.
We'd love to host you whether you've been doing this work for 30 years or 30 days. We can all learn with and from one another and everyone's successes, failures, and learnings are worth hearing. Remember, our CoP's diversity is one of our strengths and we value our differences!
