This area is formally designated as an Ungulate Winter Range and efforts here go towards improving conditions for the winter survival of ungulates, specifically mule deer. We are working towards maintenance of the diversity of structures and functions in this area. Specifically, we want to encourage the development of large Douglas-fir and maintain the uniqueness of open grasslands and meadows. In part, this is accomplished through removal of understory in the Douglas-fir and ingress of deciduous and coniferous trees in the grasslands and meadows.
