Get a behind-the-scenes look at a collaborative moose habitat enhancement project we've been working on in the McLeod Lake area.
We brought together First Nations, government, industry, researchers, and contractors on a community-led project to enhance moose populations through forage improvements.
While meeting our goal to enhance moose habitat, we created benefits for communities, song birds, fur bearers, and beavers as well; we're all connected. We'll measure success through community-defined monitoring of restoration objectives, namely, moose population growth and local food sovereignty.
McLeod Lake identified a need to restore local moose populations and reached out to us for collaborative innovation. In many areas, dense second-growth forests limited biodiversity and ungulate movements. Moose numbers were dwindling.
Our goal? To convene a group that could support local moose population growth through forage improvements using several restoration treatments, including road restoration and thinning.
